My Cybersecurity Adventure: My 5-Day CyberPatriot Advanced Camp Experience

Cyber SecurityStudent Entry

My journey into cybersecurity took a significant leap with the advanced CyberPatriot camp. The idea of attending was suggested by my tech teacher, who recommended it to our class. Being someone who loves learning new things, I eagerly took this opportunity to deepen my knowledge and skills in tech.

Arrival and First Impressions:

Upon arriving at the camp, I was thrilled to see many friends from the standard camp and to quickly bond with new students. The first day was filled with excitement as we got started with the camp’s activities and settled into the routine.

Class Hours: A Comprehensive Learning Experience:

Throughout the camp, we covered several key areas of cybersecurity:

  • Cyber Ethics: We began with Cyber Ethics, focusing on the principles of responsible behavior and decision-making in the digital world. This foundational topic emphasized the importance of ethical considerations in cybersecurity.
  • Windows 10: We explored Windows 10 security practices, learning about system configurations, security features, and best practices for maintaining a secure Windows environment.
  • Ubuntu 18: We then covered Ubuntu 18, focusing on configuration, security, and practical applications of this Linux-based operating system. This session provided valuable hands-on experience with Ubuntu.
  • Cisco Networking: Finally, we tackled Cisco Networking, learning about network design, implementation, and management using Cisco technologies. Due to time constraints, we didn’t delve as deeply into Cisco Networking as we might have liked, but we still covered some essentials.

Scheduling and Technical Challenges:

The camp’s scheduling was somewhat chaotic due to technical issues, which is common in tech-related activities. Despite these challenges, we managed to cover the essential topics and make the most of our time.

Final Day: Competition and Wrap-Up:

The last day featured a competition where we applied everything we had learned throughout the camp. The competition was designed to be a learning experience rather than a high-pressure test. I encourage future students to focus on doing their best without stressing too much about the outcome. Even if you’re not entirely sure of your abilities, like I was at the standard camp competition, the experience can still be incredibly fun. Utilizing Google to your advantage during the competition is a smart strategy. The day concluded with a certification award, recognizing our hard work and achievements throughout the camp.

Life at Camp: Beyond the Classroom:

Camp life was filled with more than just classroom activities. The food was notably good and very accommodating for those with religious or specific dietary needs. Outside of class, we enjoyed a variety of activities: Waldameer amusement park, going to Round1 for games, solving two escape rooms, mini golfing, and taking a thrilling pirate ship ride. We also had the opportunity to tour Gannon University, which was an interesting addition to our camp experience. Although staying overnight at the camp is optional, I highly recommend it. Staying overnight helps in making a lot of friends and getting close to them, which greatly enhances the overall experience.

A Challenging Moment: Support and Safety:

During the camp, I faced a significant issue, but I prefer not to disclose the details for privacy reasons. What truly stood out was the incredible support from fellow students and the staff’s meticulous efforts to ensure everyone’s safety. Their kindness and attentiveness made a challenging situation more manageable and highlighted the camp’s supportive environment.

Tips for Future Students:

One tip I found helpful is to use digital notes instead of paper. Taking notes on a document can help you better understand what the teacher is saying and stay organized. This approach made it easier for me to follow along and retain the information.

Reflections: What I Learned and Future Plans:

The CyberPatriot camp was a transformative experience. I gained valuable insights into Cyber Ethics, Windows 10, Ubuntu 18, and Cisco Networking. Although we didn’t dive deeply into every topic due to time constraints and technical issues, the knowledge and skills I acquired will be useful as I pursue a career as a full-stack developer.

Encouragement for Future Students:

Even if you’re not particularly passionate about cybersecurity, I highly recommend joining a CyberPatriot camp. The experience and skills you gain are valuable and can open doors to new interests and opportunities. It’s a fantastic way to gain new experiences and broaden your knowledge, regardless of where your career interests lie.
