Experimental – This could end at any point

I have always been a firm believer that we all learn best when we have the freedom to explore the areas that we are most interested in…that is, there is great opportunity and drive when we “have a stake in the game” beyond just the interest of a good grade. This idea is conceptually related to “google’s 20% rule“.

“Free Day Fridays” are days when students may work on personal projects (or complete past work) with the comfort of knowing no “current” assignment is expected to be worked on that day.

How to earn a “Free Day Friday”:

  • At the start of the week, 10 class points are awarded
  • At any time, points may be deducted for ANY student being off task
    • This includes, but is not limited to:
      • Playing on a phone
      • Playing games on your computer
      • Sharing content not related to course material in a way that pulls another student off task
      • Break time exceeded without reporting
    • There may be an option to earn the point back if the offending student(s) do the following (at the instructor’s discretion)
      • Write (type) a 100 word grammatically correct paragraph about:
        • what was done wrong
        • why it was bad for the class
        • how it can be avoided in the future
  • If there are points left at the start of Friday, “Free Day Friday” will commence.
    • On Free Day Friday it is your responsibility to use your time wisely.
    • 5 points will be set at the start of the day, if you are found being unproductive (same rules as above), a point is docked.
      • If all points are lost, Free Day Friday immediately ends and there will be no opportunity for it in the subsequent week.
        • Points will still be tracked, and if kept above 0 for the week, the Free Day Friday option will be back on in the next week.

Power Ups

  • If the class votes to do so, 2 points may be exchanged for 5 additional minutes on break.

Additional Notes:

  • These points are not the same as employability points in the gradebook. Those points could be deducted at the same time, or for other reasons
